Unravelling Nolan’s Mind: Cinematic Direction Through the Nodes in Play

Unravelling Nolan’s Mind: Cinematic Direction Through the Nodes in Play

When one talks of Cinema & Cinematography in general, one of the most common names that pops up in the mind of people is Christopher Nolan and of course one can say it's mainstream of course but one may wonder if his cinematic work & thinking and approach to cinema also is mainstream and that is something to ponder upon definitely. I attempt here to give a gist of how he approaches his work towards directing movies and to use this knowledge in analyzing his career from the perspective of Jyotisha and to sort of decipher as to whether they are in sync with one another.

Nolan's Style & Approach to Cinema

Few of the key themes his work revolves around are time, memory, existential questions through the use of non-linear storytelling and complex narrative structures which works in tandem to form his cinematic work which can be seen through the likes of movies like Memento, Inception where these techniques of cinematography are applied.

Also, something noteworthy of this cinematography is use of large-scale stunts and practical effects over CGI which can be seen in his movies like the Dark Knight in the iconic truck chase scene wherein minimal CGI was used and real stunts were displaced. Apart from this, with respect to his movie script where he personally hands over the script over being sent via email.

Case in point being his recent film Oppenheimer where apparently, he flew to Ireland to hand deliver the script to Cillian Murphy.  Also, he uses scripts printed on red paper with black ink to deter photocopying, and each script has the actor's name on every page to track leaks.

Also, he avoids using smartphones or email himself, writes script without the use of internet in his work thus making him very traditional & old school in cinematography.

Role of Jyotish in Deciphering Nolan

Now, one may begin to think at the very least that does his stars or destiny per se have anything at all
when it comes to approaching cinema the old school way and this can be understood through his natal chart (D1) and more so through his dasamsa/career chart (D10 chart)

Below is the natal chart of Christopher Nolan

He is Mithuna (Gemini) Lagna person with Lagna lord in 3rd house (Dheemanta Yoga) making him very intelligent. More so, one of the ways to understand why is into cinema as an industry is his 10th lord Jupiter (Ju) which is in the 5th house of creativity, cinema & entertainment and is in samsapthaka with Saturn (Sa) who is the natural karaka for career/work

Note: One of the main grahas which is making him old school/traditional in his approach his Ketu (Ke) as Ketu is traditional/old school and it is roughly 6 degrees from his Lagna Lord Budha (Me). The role of Ketu is more pronounced in his career chart (D10)

Christopher Nolan's D-10 chart

Below is the D10 chart of Nolan along with the grahas position and its respective degrees.

Some points from his D-10 chart are as follows:

  • Lagna Lord (Ma) is in 10th house of career/status in a Adhi Mitra Rashi resulting in Simhasana yoga

  • Conjunction of 9th lord (Mo) & 10th lord (Su) in 10th house resulting in Dharma karma Adipati yoga resulting in massive success & fame for him

  • Lagna co-lord (Ke) in Lagna conjunct 5th lord of power Jupiter (Ju) where Ju is getting directional strength/Digbali in Lagna and the conjunction of Ke & Ju is very powerful (less than 2 degrees) apart resulting in a powerful raja yoga. The presence of Ketu in Lagna being in its own sign and also closely aspecting Lagna (around 7 degrees) makes him very traditional & Old school in his work i.e. Cinematography

Therefore, through the above analysis, we get some perspective as to how Nolan operates in his work through the lens of Jyotisha
